Making-of for Lunatic Soul’s New Album
----------------------

The piccolo bass is an instrument that allowed me to stay true to the rule of "no electric guitars in Lunatic Soul." When you plug it into an octaver and distortion, you can achieve so-called "guitar riffs" without actually using a guitar.
You can hear this kind of piccolo bass playing on albums like “Through Shaded Woods” or “Wasteland”, for example. A lot of similar riffs will also feature on the upcoming Lunatic Soul album.
I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely looking forward to it.

I’ve always loved coming up with what I like to call “simple broken beats” – melodic riffs that are a bit “broken,” a bit “shifted,” and not necessarily in 4/4 time. If you’re curious what I mean by a “simple broken beats,” let me show you a couple of examples. These riffs come from the Lunatic Soul album “Walking on a Flashlight Beam”, specifically from the track “Gutter.”

One of the main musical concepts behind the Lunatic Soul project is... the absence of electric guitar. Yes, that's right - everything that might sound like an electric guitar on Lunatic Soul albums is either a modified bass, a keyboard, or... a piccolo bass. And here, let me give you an example of how beautifully a piccolo bass can imitate a guitar. An excerpt from the track "Vyraj", recorded at Studio Serakos in Warsaw.
Both the black and white piccolo basses are the work of Polish luthier Jacek Kobylski, known as "Nexus”.

And here's a short bass playthrough of one of my favourite fragments from Lunatic Soul's "Through Shaded Woods". There are all those trance folk-dance moments in the second part of "Summoning Dance", which I love to pick on the bass. I have to admit that I've always been into such stuff, very likely inspired by early Mike Oldfield or Hedningarna.
For those interested, the bass guitar in this clip is the Polish Nexus Jazz Style.

NEWS
And so I have started another recording session for the new Lunatic Soul album. (Let me remind you, it will be a double one ;)) To begin with, I had a short, spontaneous session in The Boogie Town Studio under the supervision of the sound engineer, Paweł Marciniak, and shortly I’ll be heading back to Serakos.
